LOUISVILLE, MISS. (WCBI) Cyber Monday and Black Friday bring corporate businesses big bucks but what do they do for small businesses who can’t afford blowout sales? That problem was solved by American Express creating Shop Small Saturday several years ago to promote small businesses. Sales, deals, and mom and pop stores are the big things tied into shop small which benefits the local businesses and community. Local store owner, Mary Snow appreciates the sale day.

“Everything about the community is linked to that sales tax and then when you shop locally that encourages the merchants, or the owners, or the artists, whoever they are, to use that money for good in the community.”

Shops in Louisville on Main Street unite to help each other promote Shop Small Saturday, says store owner, Speedy Calvert.

“It’s like a team. Everybody has got to work together to get people up here and we try to coordinate our, you know, our sales or whatever to get people to come up.”

Shoppers enjoy shopping small because it helps local owners. Shopper, Kathy Smith, also says for this reason.

“It’s so easy. It’s not like getting caught up in the hustle of the larger department stores, I love them too but you cannot beat that one on one service.”

Small business owner, Speedy Calvert, says that not as many shoppers are out shopping today compared to last year.

“This is not a spike day of Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon, especially as close to Mississippi State as we are with the big ball game going. Everybody has got that on their mind.”
