Video: Interest + Motivation = Academic Success

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi University for Women is trying to keep area girls interested in the math.

Today, (Tuesday) more than 40 girls from schools across the area participated in Sonya Kovalevksy High School Mathematics day.

Kovalevsky was a 19th century mathematician and the first woman to earn a Doctoral degree in the subject.

The girls were tested when they arrived this morning and broken up into small group before heading off to learn.

MUW Professor, Doctor Dorothy Kerzel says “It’s important to bring young students in and give them some exposure to mathematics. One of the primary goals is to encourage them to stay active in mathematics and to think about all possibilities that spin off.”A

At the end of day, prizes were awarded for the highest scores including a scholarship to MUW.
