TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — For one Northeast Mississippi family, the Delta State University shooting was the second time in less than one month that one of their children has been on a campus during an emergency.

Twenty three year old Mary Katherine Chunn is a senior at Delta State.  She began sending her mother text messages when the shooting occurred Monday morning.

The incident brought back memories of the initial reports of an active shooter on the Mississippi State University campus last month.  Mary ‘s brother, Michael, is a student at MSU.

Yonea Chunn says she was leading a homeschool session for her other children when Mary began texting from inside a barricaded classroom at Delta State.

“We immediately began to pray for the, safety of Mary and then we began to pray for the whole school, for the leaders trying to make decisions, but as a mom, I’ve been a mother for 25 years and I’ve learned that I can trust the Lord in all things,” said Yonea Chunn.

Yonea says her daughter is relieved the incident is over, but is still on edge about the shooting on campus.
