COLUMBUS, Miss. — Columbus Air Force Base’s unit effectiveness inspection concluded March 30 with the 14th Flying Training Wing receiving a rating of ‘effective’.

Among other criteria needed to garner an effective rating, an installation must meet all requirements set forth by the inspector general and personnel must demonstrate proficiency.

“Our performance was nothing short of exceptional,” said Col. John Nichols, 14th Flying Training Wing Commander. “Team BLAZE did an amazing job over the past year constantly improving our mission execution.”

Displaying a consistency of performance, the 14th FTW received a similar rating of ‘satisfactory’ after its last compliance inspection.

This is the first time Columbus AFB has undergone this particular type of inspection. Inspector General personnel have been reviewing 14th FTW practices and processes for the last year. A team of IG inspectors were on site from March 23 until March 30 to clarify their findings.

The new rating system has five potential outcomes — outstanding and highly effective are the top two with effective in the middle. Almost no installation receives the top two ratings although some units do. That was the case at CAFB but those grades for individual units are not released.
