COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Columbus city council approved a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday night that will allow the Columbus Riverwalk to be extended.

The agreement was necessary to allow the Mississippi Department of Transportation to extend the walking and biking trail 900 feet.

Kevin Stafford with Neel-Schaffer says the extension will go under the Highway 82 bridge and border U.S. Army Corps of Engineer land.

The property belongs to MDOT and the agency will pay for the estimated $250,000 project. However, costs could be lower.

Bids are expected to be taken this spring and construction could begin in the summer.
