STARKVILLE, Miss (WCBI) — The student at the center of a controversial project at Starkville High School is speaking out.

Angelica Sinclair’s project included material related to human sexuality and contraceptives.

In a video posted on Facebook, Sinclair gives a presentation about the career path she wants to take as a sexologist, then explains what a person in the field does every day.

She has the class do a demonstration with a contraceptive, while the teacher is there.

This apparently violates several school district policies, according to the school’s website.

Sinclair said she didn’t mean any harm by her presentation.

“At first I was shocked,” Sinclair said. “I was perplexed. I had no idea that my presentation would cause this. I was hurt and I feel awful. To the best of my knowledge, a majority of them complied. There was two of them who didn’t, and Ms. Ferguson gave them the option to leave if they wanted to, but they didn’t. They stayed and semi-participated.”

Students are planning to march Friday morning in support of the teacher they say is no longer in the classroom.

A petition on change.org identifies the teacher as Sherre Ferguson.
