Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — Although the state flag will continue to fly on the campus of Mississippi University for Women, the school is encouraging students to continue the conversation about the flag’s future statewide.

The Student Government Association hosted a forum Monday Night, which gave students the chance to learn about the history of the flag as well as voice their own opinions.

“…I honestly do feel like the flag should come down…”, said M.U.W. student Merika Carr.

“I see the removal of the state flag from areas, colleges, and state locations is really impeding on the culture of Mississippi and our heritage that we have”, said student Andrew Benton

“I’m really not even sure anymore because a lot of people consider it as a negative but a lot of people consider it as a positive”, said student Broderick Kizer.

The S.G.A. at the W wants to educate students on the history of the flag.

“The university is made up by the student body and the students should reflect the university and vice versa, the university should reflect the students,” said S.G.A. President Quincy Hughes, “to handle it in a manner when we make a consideration without the students or those who actually attend that college, it’s like we’re not considering their opinions.”

Students also appreciate the university’s decision to allow students to lead the discussion.

“If you learn the history behind it and why they actually put it up there…”, explained Kizer, “…then you can get some insight and it may not be as harmful in a sense to those who are concerned about it.”

“As we graduate, we are going to take positions in one way or the other and students are going to become leaders,” said student Urusha Silwl when asked about the importance of student involvement in this issue, “although not politically, in their job places, in the workplace they are going to lead.”

The S.G.A. at M.U.W. hopes this is the first of many educational forums.

The forum was not a referendum on the flag.
