STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away which means many people are anxious to stuff their faces.

Unfortunately, there will also be families who may not be as fortunate, That’s why United Way is hosting its third annual “United We Feed” food drive.

Food, Food and more food. United way is restocking to make sure everyone has a meal for this upcoming holiday season.

“When we started Saturday morning, this room was completely empty, so all of the food you see in here is a result of about 5 hours of work on Saturday collecting at the three different groceries stores and bring it here,” Kiwanis Club of Starkville President Mark Switzer said.

The organization is hosting the united We Feed food drive in four different counties, Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Winston and Webster.

During the three-week food drive, volunteers are stationed with red boxes at Kroger, Walmart, and Vowells for customers to donate food.

After everything is collected and sorted out, it’ll then be distributed to food banks, to give away to the families that are in need.

“This food drive is substantial in the amount of food we provide,” Madrina Bokenkamp of United Way said.  “It’s important to give back to the community however you can, and particularly knowing how many people there are living in the poverty level in our area.”

The organization says, nearly one in five Mississippi families regularly struggle with hunger.

But with the overwhelming supply of food they’ve received so far, they’re confident that wont be the case this holiday season.

“we have everything from rice-a-ron, to soup to spaghetti-o, bags of rice, beans, canned goods, anything non perishable.,” BokenKamp said.

And with the big game against Alabama coming up this week in Starkville, United way is believes it’ll help bring in even more donations.

“I think it will definitely help benefit the drive, so if you’re going to the grocery store to purchase tailgating goods feel free to make a donation,” Bokenkamp said.

The united We Feed food drive will be going on til November 21st.
