MATHISTON, Miss.(WCBI)–In the tiny Webster County town of Mathiston, city leaders have taken a bold step by displaying their private faith in a public way.

The motto In God We Trust dates back to the Civil War Era when there was an increased religious passion among citizens.

In a gutsy move, Mathiston Police Chief Shane Box is letting everyone know that faith does matter. And he is not ashamed nor afraid to display his faith.

“I’m sorry if you take offense to it, that’s just how I feel. And I have the, I believe I have the community’s backing in it,” said Chief Shane Box-Mathiston PD.

Having been given the go ahead to do so, Box is convinced; If these words are good enough to be printed on valuable paper and coins, what about precious cargo riding in the town’s only two vehicles paroling streets keeping citizens safe.

“With the job we do we never know if we’re going to make it back home to our families or not. As our cars are labeled, In God we do trust, that we will make it home,” said Chief Shane Box-Mathiston PD.”

For the most part, feed back from the labeling of the two patrol cars has been positive. And if there happens to be someone coming along with an opposing view of just what faith is?

“You know we have any consequences we’ll deal with it,” said Chief Shane Box.

Chief Box got a unanimous vote from the Mayor and Board of Aldermen on the action taken.
