COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – There is a new addition to the Columbus Police Department.

Stanley, the Police K9, has been in training since January and soon, he will hit the streets.
Stanley is a 2-year-old, 80 pound Belgian Malionis, who is trained to do the work of four dogs.

Suspect tracking, narcotics detection and officer protection are just a few of the many things Stanley is trained to do.

Since the beginning of the year, he has put in hours of intense training.

“We train Monday through Thursday, from 4 pm to about 2-3 am. So the dogs are getting good 10,11,12 hour days,” said his handler, Officer Mo Eguires.

On Friday, the new K9 showed off his skills, demonstrating what he’s learned.

Officer Eguires says having Stanley in the department has a number of benefits.

“The officer safety aspect, plus he’s a force multiplier. If I’m standing here and we’re having a conversation with somebody, they are more likely to run if they know there is no dog around, if there is a dog around, 9 times out of 10, people are ‘hey i give up, i don’t want anything to do with that,'” said Officer Eguires.

In two weeks, Stanley will complete his training then head to a week-long certification seminar.

Eguires says Stanley will help the officers do their job to the highest potential.

“We want to get out here and work and do our job, and just be a benefit to the community and the police department itself,” added Officer Eguires.

The pup came at a high price, the department paid around $8,000.
