Video: New Starkville High Students Look Forward To The Year

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – In less than a week, Starkville schools will begin a new era.

Hundreds of Oktibbeha County students will be moved to Starkville public schools as a result of the state mandated consolidation.

For many students, this means a big change.
Alexus Millns and Haley Ward have attended Oktibbeha County schools since kindergarten.

On Monday, these seniors will be the among new kids  attending Starkville High School.

“When I first heard about the consolidation, I was nervous, I was scared, shaking. But yesterday when I did registration and touring, now I’m just excited. I’m not even nervous anymore. I’m just ready but at the same time, I’m going to miss my school,” said Alexus Millns.

Haley Ward has spent her high school years at West Oktibbeha County High School.

She says the school has always felt like one big family.

“It’s going to be very different coming here and you have 40 teachers and nobody knows your mom, so it’s going to be very, very different,

Both students have spent time with teachers at Starkville High.

They say it’s been a warm welcome so far.

“They are so nice to me and I haven’t felt that way in a long time. Having nice teachers and nice principals, it makes you feel comfortable coming to a school, a new school at that,” said

“I took stem here, then turned around and took Spanish 1 and Human A&P, so when you start getting into an environment more and seeing people and talking to teachers and staff, I think it makes the transition more smooth.”

As the end of summer break is in sight, the two both say they are getting more anxious and excited about starting fresh on Monday.

“Monday is going to be a great day for all of us because we’re coming back from summer and seeing everybody safe and back at school. I think we’re ready to start off the school year with a bang and to show people this consolidation is not as caotic as it may seem.”

“Meeting new people for one, taking the classes that I’ve always dreamed of taking and graduating with everyone I grew up with during elementary. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
