TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It won’t be long before classes start back, and one North Mississippi group is helping kids get ready.

Local children stocked up on free school supplies, Saturday, at the United Way’s annual Back 2 School Resource Fair, which started in 2011.

Residents donated the backpacks filled with items like pencils, paper and erasers.

Participants also got to check out several informational booths, where some even offered free health screenings.

Some of the kids and parents tell WCBI they appreciate the donations.

“We hear from parents every year, who tell us if it wasn’t for this, they might not be able to send their kids with anything,” said Robin Matkin, United Way. “I mean anyone who’s trying to send a kid back to school lately knows that the supply list is exhausting.”

Organizers say between 60 and 70 volunteers worked Saturday’s event.
