TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -U. S. Senator Roger Wicker is hopeful legislation calling for tougher screening of Syrian refugees hoping to enter this country will pass soon.

On Thursday, Congress overwhelmingly approved legislation to suspend President Obama’s program to admit 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next year.

The measure would require high level officials to verify that each Syrian refugee poses no security threat.

“What I think the president ought to be listening to from the American people is the grave doubts they have, about a refugee crisis here in the United States and what that might mean for bringing in terrorists. When the director of national intelligence says he can’t rule out that terrorists could be coming in with the refugees then we need to listen up.”

Senator Wicker is hopeful President Obama will reconsider his threat to veto any legislation blocking Syrian refugees from entering the country.
