TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo may soon become the 38th city in the state to ban electronic cigarettes in many public areas.

After putting off a vote last week, council members appear to have reached a deal that satisfies businesses and health advocates.

Businesses that generate more than half their business from the sale of the cigarette substitutes can allow smoking of the devices. In the last year, several have opened in the city. Also, tobacco and cigar shops that get more than 50 percent of their business from those sales can allow smoking.

The rule would not allow you to light up in convenience stores or similar places.

The council could vote on the deal next week.
