TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -Thirty Tupelo teenagers spent part of their summer vacation learning about hard work and how the city functions.

This afternoon, a reception was held at Tupelo City Hall for participants in the “Plant A Seed” program. The 8 week initiative allows teenagers to take on a job through the city of Tupelo.

The workers earn a paycheck, have a regular schedule and perform a variety of tasks in city departments.

“I hope they take away self esteem they want to pass on to their peers that they can have a great life if they can stay on track and I’m here , my colleagues and all the city employees are willing to help them, to see they can have a great future and that’s what we are trying to do.”

Applicants must go through an interview process. The council approves funding for the program each fiscal year.
