WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — More than six years after planning began, West Point is a step closer to having safer routes to school for some school children.

The West Point Board of Selectmen is close to awarding a $415,000 contract to Simmons Construction for new sidewalks on Brame Avenue, Fifth Street, Progress Street and other streets leading to Fifth Street Junior High and Central School.

Falcon Paving also will get a $60,000 bid to pave about a half mile of Center Street.

In 2008 the city received a $560,000 Safe Routes to Schools grant.

Construction could begin by spring.
