West Point Man Dies After Being Hit By Car

PRESS RELEASE

West Point, MS, Monday, November 30, 2015: On November 26, 2015, shortly after 2:00am, the West Point Police Department was dispatched to Highway 45 alternate North near the SOCO Truck Stop after a driver called E911 to report that someone had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival police discovered that 65 year old Clarance D. Chandler of 466 Calhoun Street, West Point, had been struck by a vehicle just north of the Michell Buick Auto Sales. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, who placed the 911 call, was at the scene and reported to police that she was traveling north on the highway when the victim suddenly stepped into the highway and directly into the path of her vehicle. The driver, whose name has not been released, was evaluated on the scene for signs of driver impairment but none were found.

Police are also investigating whether Mr. Chandler was suffering from any type of physical or mental impairments. It’s unclear why he was walking near the highway at 2:00am or why he would try to cross at that point since no businesses were open at that hour on the opposite side of the highway.

No charges have been filed and the incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the West Point Police Department at (662) 494-1244.
