MSU Men’s Golf Returns to Postseason After Three Year Absence
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI/MSU Athletics) – After a three-year break from postseason play, the No. 23 Mississippi State men’s golf team received a berth in the Baton Rouge Regional hosted by LSU at the University Club on May 16-18.
MSU last appeared in the 2009 Southwest Regional hosted by Texas when it finished tied for 10th. A year prior in 2008, State advanced out of the NCAA East Regional to the NCAA Championships at the Birk Boilermaker Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind., where it tied for 27th.
This marks the Bulldogs’ eighth postseason appearance as a team and third in the last six years. Coach Clay Homan is making his third postseason appearance as a coach but has also guided two individuals to postseason appearances.
State has posted four tournament wins on the season, the most in school history. This year’s squad also posted a fifth-place card in the SEC Championships, its best conference finish since the 2007-08 campaign.
The Bulldogs have already seen LSU’s University Club once this season during the David Toms Intercollegiate when they posted a 54-over 918 to tie for fourth.
Junior Chad Ramey is the only Bulldog player with postseason experience as he made the NCAA Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga., a season ago. The All-SEC First Team member finished tied for 45th. This season the Fulton native notched 71.89 average card, which ranks second all-time in MSU history.
Other teams in the Baton Rouge Regional include No. 2 Alabama, No. 10 Florida, No. 17 LSU, No. 26 Houston, No. 34 Northwestern, No. 38 Tennessee, No. 47 South Alabama, No. 50 Coastal Carolina, UAB, Wichita State, Southeastern Louisiana and Houston Baptist.
The top five teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships to be held at the Capitol City Club in Atlanta, Ga., on May 28 – June 2.
With the Mississippi State women’s golf team also appearing in the NCAA Central Regional on May 9-11, this marks only the second time in MSU history that both the men’s and women’s programs have appeared in postseason play during the same season
