Tupelo Swimmer Killed in Tuscaloosa Tornado on Monday Night
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WCBI/WIAT) — A former Tupelo student has died following the tornado that ripped through west Alabama on Monday evening.
John Servati, 21, was killed when a retaining wall collapsed inside his home on 22nd Avenue Monday night.
Servati, a junior, was a student-athlete at the University of Alabama and is listed on the athletic department’s website as a member of the swimming and diving team. Alabama had just completed the 2014 season last month.
John was one of 12 members of the men’s swimming and diving team that earned SEC winter academic honor roll honors. He majored in finance.
It’s unclear at this time if Servati’s death was directly related to the tornadoes that touched down in Tuscaloosa County.
Servati helped lead the Tupelo boys swimming team to four consecutive Mississippi State Championships from 2007-2011. He set state records in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and was a part of the state record setting 200 medley and freestyle relays.
He was taken to DCH Hospital Monday evening following the tornado where he was pronounced dead.
