AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Using a very special technology, Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory is partnering with stroke specialists, and they are working in the best interest of patients to enhance medical care.

When emergency treatment requires the use of a skilled neurologist that just might not be on staff at a small local hospital, a telemedicine service is now being offered to hundreds of hospitals and provides the best care to each patient each time.

“This technology allows a bedside assessment via a telemonitor by a neurologist for our patients in the ER,” said Dr. Chris Tidwell/Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center.

When a victim suffers a life threatening stroke, time is of the essence.

“We are all familiar with the heart attack, this is a brain attack. As with heart time is muscle time is brain. We need a rapid assessment by our friends from neurology to make the decision whats the next best step for our patient,” said Dr. Chris Tidwell.

With the company providing Specialists On Call there is joint consultation with local physicians and the partnering expert calling into the hospital.

“There are so many nuances of the exam. If a doctor can’t pick it up on the video conference, then I can certainly interact,” added Tidwell.

And the conference-call hookup is not just limited to an emergency room setting.

“It’ll work on the medical floor, it’ll work in intensive care units, it’s a remarkable piece of technology,” said Tidwell.

Each year almost 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke. It’s the third leading cause of death.
