Video: Kids Summer Feeding Program

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Armed with a department of education grant, a caring group in North Mississippi launches a feeding program. The program for school age children is helping get them through the long hot summer months ahead of us.

We Care is both the name and the mission of a small group making sure not one but two nutritious meals are served from now through the end of summer at Sandhill and Southgate Arms in Starkville.

“Yesterday it was a little slow for breakfast, we started out with 23. For lunch we got up to 27. So each day the numbers is growing. Its growing each day,” said Shakeeta Robinson/WE Care Committee.

The goal is to feed at least 100 children per day. A delicious breakfast of pancake and sausages is served from 8 to nine thirty. For lunch a dish of mouth watering baked chicken, potato salad, and corn are on the menu for these low income kids one through eighteen years of age. Probably foods not found on their menu at home.

“And you’d be amazed at how many kids when they are looking forward to this, they come out because this is probably the only time they’re going to get something that’s going to be beneficial for their stomachs. So you know one thing about it, and rest assure is that they are not going to go the remainder of the day being hungry,” said Dianna Phillips/WE Care Committee.

“You know you never know whats going on in that household. Why they are not eating. So this is just something we’re doing. We know we can get two meals out today,” said Robinson.

And so those who could be elsewhere on vacation are at locations like the one in Starkville… so that young ones less fortunate, may feast on hot meals during the long hot summer ahead of us.

“Yes I know, I just want to help and try to help with the kids this summer, feed them,” said Robinson.

“I can rest assure at night that that child did not go to bed hungry,” said Dianna Phillips.

The We Care Committee has launched their summer feeding program for children at sites in West Point and Grenada as well as Starkville.
