OKOLONA, Miss. (WCBI) — Voters in Okolona said yes to school improvements. Now, educators in the Okolona Separate School District are discussing plans to spend two million dollars in bond money.

Moving forward with structural improvements within the district, Superintendent Dexter Green sat Tuesday with board members and other professional that will help in giving a much needed new facelift to school properties.

“One of the key items in any school district is efficiency and when you are spending tax dollars you know taxpayers want to know that you are using those in the most efficient way possible,” said Warren Bowen/NewPath Consultants.

“And so that’s why we are involving consultant firms such as NewPath as well as we brought in Architects today so that they could listen to the plan. And give us the advice that we need as a school district. So that we can move forward and do whats in the best interest of the children and the students in the Okolona School District,” said Superintendent Dexter Green/Okolona separate School District.

When monies are disbursed, starting from top to bottom, funds for new roofs are in the bond package.

“Heating, cooling units in our schools. They are right now not up to par. And at the same time we are trying to address renovating this three story building right here in the central office building. Also we are looking at new playgrounds. Put in a new playground at Okolona Elementary School,” said Green.

One phase of renovations completes a football field project to include fence and field house. Passage of a bond issue is one thing, now school district leaders must move with caution when it comes to the project where no contracts have been signed as of yet.

“Moving in the same direction to make sure that we spend this bond issue money very very wisely for the boys and girls in our school district,” said Green.

One phase of the improvements to structures within that school district begins during the week of the Thanksgiving Holiday when students are not in class.
