Rebuilding efforts underway for bridge in Yalobusha County

YALOBUSHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Rebuilding efforts have begun for Gums Crossing Bridge in Yalobusha County.

Supervisors said a crew from Lafayette, Louisiana began test drills under the bridge Tuesday.

Crew members drilled the holes to see how far they’ll have to drive pilots for the new bridge.

The data collected over the next few days will be sent to the engineering firm the county has selected to rebuild the bridge.

“Instead of a 35-foot span, we have a pilot every 35 feet, it’s always been bad about catching drift logs, things of that nature, we’re going to expand it out to about 105 feet, hopefully everything can drift on through there where the lake is low. It’s not just a bridge, it’s a lifeline to a lot of people, and it’s the only lifeline we have, and it’s broken, and we’ve got to get it fixed,” said District 5 supervisor Gaylon Gray.

Crews will continue doing test drills until Saturday.
