Starkville planning next step in annexation process

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Starkville is looking to grow in number and size.

The city has been in the process of an annexation study.

The goal is to bring more residents and land inside the city limits.

The study area is east of Starkville and could add an extra 2,000 people to the town’s overall population.

Mayor Lynn Spruill said that won’t make a large difference, but it will show growth and development, which would benefit the town.

In Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting, city leaders plans to take the next step in the annexation process.

Spruill said the board will ask the city attorney and Slaughter and Associates, who have been doing the study, to move forward with crafting an ordinance.

“And that all includes requiring a survey of the new area so that all of those boundaries and things can be drafted and then you’ll have public hearings and even though you only have to have for drafting an ordinance or for adopting an ordinance you only have to have a public hearing we will have probably at minimum two public hearing,” said Mayor Spruill.

Spruill also said the city plans to have additional community meetings to make everyone comfortable with the city’s plans and to explain the impacts.
