EMCC Cosmetology Students Graduate
MAYHEW – Kim King has known this day was coming since she was 5 years old.
King, of Louisville, was one of 16 students to graduate from East Mississippi Community College’s Cosmetology program Monday evening during a ceremony at the Golden Triangle campus. She was named the group’s Outstanding Student by instructor Coretta Johnson, also of Louisville, for maintaining a 4.0 GPA, competing in the state Skills USA competition, holding membership in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and acting as treasurer for the Golden Triangle campus chapter of the National Technical Honor Society.
“Plus, she lives the farthest from school and is usually the first student in every morning,” said Johnson. “And any activities we’ve
had, Kim has participated in them all and participated with a smile.”
The secret, said King, is that her year in the Cosmetology program since graduating in 2012 from Winston Academy was all a part of her dream.
“Since I was 5 years old I’ve known I wanted to do this. There’s a picture of me in my high school annual doing my sister’s hair in the sink,” said King.
“It’s bittersweet to finish. I’m so happy I chose this particular school this particular year.”
King chose EMCC so she could continue living with her parents through school. Her class work, experience working at EMCC’s salon and success in statewide competition (she finished 4th in the Aesthetics category at Skills USA in Jackson) have already earned king a job at Envy Hair Studio in Louisville.
With a relieved sigh, she described the feeling of having a job waiting for her immediately after school as “awesome!”
Dorothy Ennis, president of the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology, addressed the graduates during Monday’s ceremony.
The Cosmetology program operates a salon at EMCC’s Golden Triangle campus that is open to the public. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday from October through June. The next class of students in the one-year certificate program will begin in August and complete a portion of its training in preparation for the salon’s re-opening in October.
The Golden Triangle campus is at 8731 South Frontage Road in Mayhew.
The deadline to register for the fall semester at EMCC is Aug. 16. For more information about the Cosmetology program, EMCC’s salon or other programs call (662) 243-1900 or visit us at eastms.edu.
