Nonpartisan Candidate Forum hosted ahead of Tuesdays election

League of Women Voters of the Golden Triangle Area hosted the event in Columbus to give voters a chance to get to know their candidates.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Municipal elections are coming up across the state.

One of those elections is right here in Columbus.

Callie Poole with the League of Women Voters of the Golden Triangle Area said municipal elections are among the most important.

“These elections are the ones that are going to affect us the most,” Poole said. “And federal elections are important, but these are the ones that are going to have the direct impact on our daily lives.”

Randi Robison, an attendee, reiterated that sentiment.

“This is what really affects our city, our county, where we live,” Robison said. “These are the people in our neighborhood who care about us and take time out of their lives to try to reinvest in the community. And I really believe that voting in your local elections is very important. And it affects your life so much more than you realize.”

The League of Women Voters of the Golden Triangle Area hosted an open forum for Columbus voters.

One voter who had her vote locked in after the forum was Randi Robison.

“I definitely don’t think that this changed my mind,” Robison said. “I think that some of the ideas that I had have been solidified. And it was great to hear more about the things that our city is already doing for the City of Columbus.”

A major theme of these elections is change.

Poole said what she wants to see is a more inclusive Columbus.

“I would just like to live in a community where everyone is welcome,” Poole said. “Like everyone feels like they can be a part of the community.”

Former police officer, Keith Worshaim, said he wants to see a larger police presence.

And, to see them paid more.

“I’d love to see some more work on the river,” Worshaim said. “We’re right here by the river. We don’t use the river. If you want to run dope up the river, you can, because the police department is not patrolling out there. We just need more police presence and everything else.”

In Columbus, the Mayor’s Office and 4 City Council seats are all up for grabs.

Municipal elections for Mississippi will take place Tuesday.

And you can tune in right here at WCBI to stay up-to-date as results roll in.
