Biking in Plantersville for a good cause

PLANTERSVILLE, Miss., (WCBI) – For many, St. Jude has helped to give many children more years of life.
And one Lee County town holds an annual Bikeathon each year, as a way to raise money for the ongoing cause.

From bikes to trikes, scooters, strollers, ATVs, and wagons. Many came out to the Plantersville Community Center for its annual Bikeathon.

Ginger Logan says for the past 36 years, Plantersville has unified for St. Jude and its work, and to her, that’s a beautiful thing.

“When this community comes together for St. Jude, there’s just no stopping anybody here. I mean, you can see everybody having a good time, and it’s just a mission,” Logan said.

Logan said after seeing St. Jude for herself, through her grandchild’s battle, what they say they do. That same sentiment was shared by Mamie Allen. Allen is the grandmother of Jahara Miller, this year’s honoree. Miller is currently in remission for lymphoma for her and her family. It’s been a hard two months. But it’s the love of their community and what they experienced at St. Jude that kept them going.

“Now that she’s been diagnosed, you know I knew that they did a lot of things, but I see firsthand now what they’re about cause everything you see on the television and on the advertisement is true plus. They do even more than you would even think they do,” Allen said.

She fought back tears as she talked about her granddaughter’s journey.

“They told us she would be in the ICU for some weeks. She was there for one week and two days. God is good! Then they told us she would be at St. Jude for some months before she would be able to do anything. She was not walking. Within two weeks, she was walking without a walker, and now she’s in outpatient care.”

Also, during the event, the family of Madalyn Brooke Bells raised over $6,000 for the Bikeathon, and Kamari Foster, a graduating senior and the Salutatorian of Shannon High School received a $500 scholarship from the Barbara Armstrong Foundation.
