Mayor’s Unity Celebration makes a comeback
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Saturday, Mayor Stephen Jones and the City of Columbus held the Mayor’s Unity Celebration, as a way to give back to the community.
The Columbus Riverwalk was the place to be Saturday for a day of food and fun, and a chance to meet with city leaders.
It was the return of the Mayor’s Unity Celebration.
There was even live entertainment from the Artistik Band and Murrell “DJ Marrero” Evans.
Jones says this event has been held in the past, and he wanted to bring it back.
“It was an annual thing back in the day and we’re just bringing it back to give the people — well first of all to have a good time and also to communicate with the police chief is here, the fire chief is here, public works is here, we have all the city staff here so we want people to be able to come out and talk to them,”
He says it’s a way to meet those working for the city, talk to them about what’s going on, or just encourage them.
“We want them to come out, and as I said, just have a conversation with them. Whatever they want to say, if something is bothering them in their area or just, they just want to tell them how good of a job they’re doing,”
Jones says it’s also a way to update the community on what’s going on.
“And to let them know all of the good things we have going on. If you look over here, we have the Amphitheatre, they’re getting ready to start on it Monday, so we just want to brag on Columbus a little bit,”
Jones says that this will be an annual event.
