Rebuilt fire station to serve as Lowndes County voting precinct
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lowndes County voting precinct now has an official location.
For the past few years, Immanuel Baptist Church and the nearby school, Columbus Christian Academy, has been used as a temporary voting site.
As of Monday morning’s Board of Supervisor’s meeting, August 31, registered District One voters now have a permanent precinct.
In the past, county leaders had to search for a new precinct location after a tornado destroyed a District One fire station some years back.
This year, that fire station was restored.
The Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Station was named as the new voting precinct.
Lowndes County Board of Supervisors President Trip Hairston said the Lone Oak Station is ready to serve the community.
“We think this is a win-win. It’s win for Immanuel School (Columbus Christian Academy) because they don’t have to worry about operating a space where elections are being held at the same time to try and educate children. And also, we think it’s a good thing to showcase the new fire department. And we really are glad to see that. we’re glad to see that building be put in good use for that way,” said Hairston.
