Lowndes County first responders perform annual disaster drill
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County first responders went through their annual disaster drill Thursday, September 10, at the Mississippi University for Women campus.
The event featured different agencies such as Columbus Fire and Rescue, Columbus Sherrif and Police departments, and different medical associations. Columbus Fire and Rescue P.I.O Jaquay Sherrod went over the goals of the training event this morning.
“Just so we can be able to communicate,” said Sherrod. “Work together, not have to wait until a disaster happened before we, you know, come together to try to work it out. Right now, today we’re trying to see what works and what doesn’t work. We’ll just sit down at a round table, talk about everything that happened today, and be prepared.”
Along with the first responders of Lowndes County, MUW nursing majors who’re about to go into the field themselves were on scene getting hands on training. Some of them were also acting as injured patients. Senior nursing major Jamilia Berry talked more about what students did at today’s training event.
“Today we’ve been going around to the Moulage students that were landing in the field,” said Berry. “And you’re trying to tag them to see if they are a green tag. Like can we help them? Are they deceased? Which is a black tag, yellow tag. Just seeing who we can help and prioritize first.”
Thursday’s training is seen as a success in the growth of the current field of responders and for those who soon will join it.
