HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) — As we reported last week, Algoma is the cross tie capital of the world. Vardaman has long been known as the Sweet Potato Capital.
But Houlka or actually New Houlka as it is officially known wants everyone to know it is the cornbread capital. This weekend is the 3rd annual Cornbread Festival in the Chickasaw County town. The city decided to go with cornbread because it was always the dream of a former mayor. And the festival lives up to its billing as visitors for five dollars get to sample and judge the various cornbread samples in three categories. Tina Pullen says the event is really starting to attract folks from outside the community.
“We are having more and more people come from outside coming,” she says. “Now the first year that we had it, it was mostly local people and since then we have ventured out I guess and the word’s gotten out we’ve published it more and announced it more and we’ve had people from kind of far off to come,” Pullen points out.
Pullen says they use to proceeds from the festival to pay for much needed improvement projects in the community. They hope to clear about 12-hundred dollars. She says it is really a chance for the community to come together and enjoy themselves.
