TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo Public School Board members have revamped the district’s non negotiable discipline policy.

The new policy means students with knives in their vehicles won’t automatically be expelled.

Board members say the change was prompted after knives were found in two students’ vehicles on campus.

The Board president encourages students to be responsible whenever they take their cars onto school property.

“We would like for our students that drive to understand that they’re responsible for their vehicle, not their parents, they’re responsible, once they remove themselves from their household and get into that vehicle, they are now responsible for that car and we would like for them to grow up to be responsible individuals and it starts when you are in control of that vehicle.”

The students are subject to a ten day suspension. Also, a community advisory group will meet in the future to review discipline policies and suggest possible changes.
