OKOLONA, Miss. (WCBI)- Mississippi has seen an increase in the unemployment rates.

A recent study shows rates have jumped from six percent, to six point four percent.

But, to help change that,  Fresh Start Business Center in Okolona hosted its third annual Multi-Employer job fair.

“It’s very important to get jobs right now to keep income coming through the houses,” executive director of Fresh Start Business Center John Standfield said.

But getting those jobs can sometimes be tough, just ask Aeriel Armstrong.

“It has been really hard trying to find a job just because most people go by who you know, not what you know,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong graduated from college a year ago.

She said she’s currently employed, but has been searching for over year trying to find something better.

“I just really want a career, not just a job,” Armstrong said.

And that’s when job fairs and companies like Asurion come into play.

“What we’re trying to do is go out in the community and let people know there are jobs out there, we are offering jobs, full time jobs,” job recruiter Beth Scott said.

Companies come into job fairs like these and provide job opportunities to job seekers.

“We’re looking for people with customer service experience, good communication skill, good computer skills,” Scott said.

Armstrong said for her, these job fairs provide hope.

“I get to go out and meet the people that are hiring and they’re giving me a sense of hope and interviews are always good,” she said.

And Armstrong walked away today feeling accomplished and confident something will work in her favor.

“The job fair went pretty well. I have a lot of potential leads and I get to speak with a lot of the jobs I was interested in,” Armstrong said.
