Starkville, Miss. (WCBI) — Working smoke detectors helped save the life of seven Mississippi State University students in a house fire early Wednesday morning.
Starkville Fire and Rescue responded to the fire at 2:30 A.M. on Louisville Street and investigators said when they arrived on the scene, the back porch “was engulfed in flames”.
The home was being rented to students, and investigators said the landlord had done an efficient job of keeping tabs on the smoke detector. The smoke detectors woke one of the students up, allowing him to alert the rest of his roommates and gave them a chance to escape.
Fire Marshall Mark McCurdy said, “…the fact that they had working smoke detecotrs, we can attribute that there are seven people who are alive today…”
“…This story could have been much worse had they not had workiung detectors to wake them up and let them escape this fire…”, said McCurdy.
McCurdy also hoped the story would help serve as a reminder for residents to stay on top of routine smoke detector checks, saying a test should be run at least once a month.
Fire investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire and no one in the home was injured.
