MUW Alumni Association Announces Record Year For Membership

COLUMBUS, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – The Mississippi University for Women Alumni Association announced it has reached more than 1,600 active members for the organization, the largest membership since recording began for the association, which was founded in 1889.

The association’s “Back to Blue” campaign, which encouraged alumni to become active members by donating $40 or more to the university, was a two-week membership drive that included social media, phone calls, emails and letters to prospective members.

MUWAA President Amy Strickland-Tate, of Tupelo, set a goal of increased membership for the year when she assumed office in March 2015.

“With the increasing success of Mississippi University for Women, now is the time to put a spotlight on our alumni association and showcase the benefits it offers to members and the University,” she said.

“With The W experiencing record growth, the support of our alumni and friends has never been more important.”

Tate announced the results of the successful campaign at the winter board meeting Feb. 13.

At the end of 2015, the MUWAA recorded a 21 percent increase in dues-paying members over 2014.

Tate also highlighted more than 200 alumni made a first-time donation to The W, and an additional 203 alumni gave for the first time in the past five years.

The final numbers also showed active membership doubled in size over the past five years.

“The MUW Alumni Association plays a vital role in connecting W alumni and friends, funding scholarships for students and supporting many university programs,” she said.

The MUWAA has seen a growth of chapters around the country and awards three scholarships annually.

Membership will also be an important theme at MUW’s upcoming Homecoming event March 31 through April 3.

MUW President Dr. Jim Borsig said the Association’s growth results in a positive impact on the university and current students.

“A 21 percent increase in dues-paying members is phenomenal growth, and I commend the association’s volunteer leadership for a campaign that has engaged a record number of graduates in the life of The W,” he said.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to the commitment and dedication of our alumni. I am pleased by the good work of the Alumni Association and Foundation Board of Directors to support the university. They are helping The W thrive and grow.”
