ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – An early morning shooting leaves one Aberdeen man dead and another behind bars.
Investigators say the call came in around 5:30 Wednesday morning.
34-year-old Jermaine Elliott is now charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of 24-year-old Ronele Jones.
Family members of the homeowner, Porsha Stevenson, say Jones wasn’t supposed to be on the property.
“This had been going on for months and she had a restraining order on him. And he’s supposed to stay 50 feet away from her. And he was up on the front porch and this is what happened,” said Bobby Cater, Stevenson’s Grandfather.
Cater says his grand-daughter had previously been in a relationship with Jones but had recently ended it.
“This guy had been stalking her for sometime,” said Cater.
Cater says Jones came to his grand-daughter’s house early in the morning, when she heard him outside that’s when she called Elliott for help.
The two men allegedly got into a confrontation on the porch, that’s when shots were fired.
Cater says Elliott was trying to protect his grand-daughter.
“Somebody come up on my property and I cant protect myself? It’s something wrong with the system,” said Cater.
Sherri Gates’ son was also recently shot in Aberdeen.
A month prior, his father was murdered.
Gates is friends with the family involved in wednesday’s shooting and says she is concerned about the community.
“I thank God that my son ended up coming home, he was blessed, thank God for his grace, but this is just a lot of senseless death that we are having here in this community, and it needs to be addressed or something it’s just an outrage,” said Gates.
Gates says she wants to see a change in the city and for senseless violence to stop.
“Do we need to come together as a community to find more jobs or things for these teenagers to do, but something needs to be done. God really needs to come and see about our city,” added Gates.
Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley says the victim died from a single gunshot wound.
The suspect remains in custody.
