ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department will soon have new radios for better communication in the field.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says it’s been around five years since the department last updated their radio system.

The department will soon implement 48 Mississippi Wireless Information Network radios.

That is the same system the Mississippi Highway Patrol uses now.

Sheriff Cantrell says the county already has two Miss-Win radio towers, which are taller than the ones they use now.

Cantrell says there are many dead spots where communication is tough in the county and new radios will mean mean better safety for his deputies.

“We’re trying to come up with some good methods to make sure that we can get these radios at a good price. And that it will make it safer for our officers out here in the field in Monroe county, enforcing the law,” said Sheriff Cantrell.

The department will first purchase hand-held radios, which cost around $1,300 each then upgrade to car units.
