Amory, Miss. (WCBI) — The Amory Mayor and Board of Aldermen held a town hall meeting to hear comments and concerns from residents about possible new rental ordinances.
Both tenants and landlords like came to speak their mind about a proposal presented by the city and to also ask questions about what the laws would mean for them.
Amory City Attorney John Creekmore said the proposal is a “rough draft”, and that the city wanted to hear from the public before making any ordinances official.
“We’ve had issues that have been brought to us with regards to rental properties in the city…”, said Creekmore, “…we want to address those. We want to address them fairly, in a way that is fair for the landlords and the tenants.”
Creekmore also said the city is looking for the ordinance to help with health, safety, and property development concerns brought to them by residents.
Mayor Brad Blalock said the city is looking to do something about the concerns for “blight” in the city, and was very pleased with the turnout in Tuesday’s meeting.
Blalock said the board will now take all the information, suggestions, and questions residents addressed and sit down with the city’s Planning and Zoning Board, who Blalock said originally “brought forth concerns to establish a rental ordinance…”
No official decisions were made in Tuesday’s meeting. City leaders anticipate another public meeting to discuss any changes to the originally proposed ordinances.
