Governor Vetoes General Fund Budget

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WCBI) — Despite allegations he had an affair with his top aide, Alabama’s governor vetoes the general fund budget.

State lawmakers passed the budget, Wednesday.

Governor Robert Bentley says it “lacks adequate funding for essential government services.”

He says the proposed budget falls short of what the Medicaid agency needs to provide services, and the Department of Corrections needs to be adequately funded to address prison reform.

Bentley adds the state’s BP settlement money shouldn’t be used to pay for recurring annual expenses, calling it “fiscally irresponsible and shortsighted.”

Legislators will take another look at the budget when they return from their break, April 5.
