Broken Drains Can Be a Hazard if Not Reported

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — All this rain has to go somewhere, and that’s why the city has storm drains on almost every block.

But what is meant to keep streets safer can actually be a hazard.

Watch out if your walking downtown in the friendly city, falling into one of this isn’t too nice.

It’s an issue that Public Works Director Casey Bush says come from reckless driving and tight turns.

“It’s a constant thing because we have semi trucks, 18 wheeler trucks making those turns and bending them or breaking our inlet boxes so it’s an ongoing thing,” says Bush.

There is no scheduled maintenance but city crews can report the issue.

“We have a concrete crew that actually replaces those. If they see those or another guy sees a broken top or bent one they will let us know but some of them does get by us,” says Bush.

That’s why citizen watch dogs are is important.

“If they see an inlet top that’s off or that’s unstable by all means call my department,” says Bush.

Bush says a heads up can help keeping people safe.

“We would love to try and address the issue before someone gets hurts,” says Bush.
