TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo could be the next school district to get large domes that double as storm shelters and gyms. In special meetings Thursday afternoon, the school board and city council were expected to approve applications for grants for shelters at Carver, Joyner and Thomas Street Elementary Schools.

The district is seeking almost 2.1 million dollars and would chip in another $272,000.00 in local funds. The shelters are like those first built at Smithville and East Webster after their schools were destroyed by tornadoes in 2011. In the last year, other districts from Louisville to Pontotoc County have been awarded similar shelters.
