Tupelo Residents Celebrate Historic Tradition

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo residents came together at Hancock Park to celebrate Juneteenth.

“Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves…in 1863 I believe and some of the southern states refused to give up the slaves…”, said United Brothers and Sisters President Mack Turner, “…and ever since then we’ve been having Juneteenth to celebrate the freedom and the unity of the community.”

The United Brothers and Sisters hosted the event.

Turner said this is the fourth year the celebration was held at Hancock Park, but that this has been a community tradition for more than twenty years.
