Staying On Top Of Your Health
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-Staying on top of your health should always be a top priority and some residents in Starkville are hoping to bring awareness to personal health.
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., held its annual Health Fair on Saturday.
Venders were set up to give out health screenings and there was also a mobile mammogram unit on site.
Thanks to a grant from the sorority, Columbus resident Kathy Moscella had the opportunity to check on her health, for free.
“I usually tell my daughter that no one can take care of you better than you and the man upstairs,” said Moscella.
Moscella had her blood pressure and blood sugar levels checked, and also went through a mammogram screening.
“A lot of times if you don’t qualify for the ObamaCare insurance as in my case, so you seek out other ways of having to get these test done,” she said.
Moscella knows said she knows the importance of staying on top of her personal health, and she’s grateful for the grant.
“It’s blessing that I’m able to get this grant, because It was time for me to have a mammogram done and I didn’t have the funds to get it done,” she said.
“We are so excited to provide these,” said Leigh Summerville, president of the starkville chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority Inc. “We did a partnership fundraiser with the Starkville Fire Department last October called the Pink Hills 5k, and we used the money we raised from the fundraiser to provide free mammogram for six women.”
Summerville said part of Saturday’s mission was to empower people to take care of themselves.
“In these instances we have re-occurrence of breast cancer in families so just knowing that individual members are being screened, whether its your sister, your aunt, there’s a woman that has some input in your life and we want her to be screened because we want her to be there for you,” said Summerville.
“We as women have to do a better job of taking care of ourselves so when family or friends call on us we can be there,” said Moscella.
Over 20 venders came out to participate in this years fair.
