Video: Road Paving Selection
COLUMBUS, Miss, (WCBI)— The ride can get bumpy when riding in an area where the roads need work. It can be unpleasant and even damage your car but what really goes into paving the streets
The roads in certain areas of the golden triangle are in need of some attention but I learned today that there is more then what meets the eye when it come to paving a street.
It’s the same most places we go in the golden triangle.
These Roads that are in serious need of repair.
Columbus Engineer Kevin Stafford tells me there’s a lot that goes into the process of road paving.
Kevin Stafford City Engineer says,”the councilmen and we work together prioritizing a list of the conditions of the roads…a lot of roads have utility issues whether it’s drainage, water, sewer, electrical it just doesn’t matter along the roadway also we look at the condition of the road and the volume of traffic how long has it been since it was last paved and it’s condition in relation to that.”
Stafford says the road work can get pricey, with numbers in the 3 or 4 million dollar range… but it just depends.
“what type and how many roads we’re doing and we try to do it later in the year when normally gas prices have leveled out”Money isn’t the only factor. Time plays a significant role as well.
” In working with our utility companies and our and our councilman we put together the over all list.” Stafford says,”normally that take any where from 2 to 3 months once we have that list we’ll put it out for council approval and publish it”
Stafford says they must advertise for bids which is a month process and then spend an additional 2 to 3 weeks after bids
getting council approval, going through contracts, bonds, insurances before they are able to give the contractor notice to proceed.
But despite all the details needed to pave a road Stafford says the most important thing the community needs to know is…
Stafford says,”to know if they have a street that they feel has minor issues that need repair for car damage things like that that we may not be seeing please report it.”
