Video: Having a Pet Can Give You Longer Life

STARKVILLE, Miss.(WCBI)—Exercise and eating well are on the path to a healthy life style but having a pet may be just what the Dr. ordered.

Earlier this evening at the Wise Center on MSU’s campus; guest speaker, Purina Vet, Kurt Venator; Presents People and Pets; Better Together,

WCBI’s Victoria Bailey sits down with the expert…and tells us more about pet benefits.

Purina Veterinarian Dr. Kurt Venator says,”I just think that pets add so much value to our lives.”

Forget the apple Purina vet Kurt Venator says pets are the best way to keep the doctor away.

Pet owner , Will Williamson says,”Pets can help blood pressure, help to reduce triglycerides levels, help to reduce cholesterol. From an emotional stand point we know pets can reduce loneliness they can increase self confidence.”

Owning a pet is a huge responsibility and the first step is picking one to match your personality.

Venator says,” Some are more high maintenance then others some are more layed back and don’t require a whole lot. So I think you should do your research before you just run out and buy something.”

And for families concerned about pet allergies…

Venator says,”There’s a growing body of evidence that shows if you actually grow up at a young age with pets you can actually be fine from an allergy stand point over time.” “Because there are certain breeds that don’t instigate allergies in people.”

Dr. Kurt Venator says; the biggest benefit of all is. “When you think about pet owners in general about 66 percent of them; so almost 2/3rds believe one of the best perks of having a pet in their lives is that it boosts their mood. Over all pets just have a wonder impact on our lives and I think will help with out over all well-being.

Studies show an estimated 60 percent of American households have at least one pet.
