Mississippi To Begin Bicentennial Celebration
COLUMBUS, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – On October 2, Mississippians will have the opportunity to begin the state’s 200th birthday celebration during a ceremonial kick off in Columbus, MS. Visit Columbus is thrilled and honored to be the first to host a Bicentennial Celebration Exhibit featuring Mississippi’s original constitution and a rare, painstakingly – preserved Twenty-Star United States Flag. The 20th star was added to mark Mississippi’s entrance into the union.
“We are delighted that so many Mississippians will be able to view the flag and constitution as they travel to Columbus and then across the state,” said Katie Blount, director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. “It is only through partnerships with local organizations like Visit Columbus that we are able to commemorate two hundred years of statehood in such a fashion.”
The public is invited to join the festivities Sunday, October 2, at 3:30 p.m. at Trotter Convention Center with special guest, former United States Congressman, J.C. Watts, Jr. who will give special remarks and welcome honored guests and dignitaries from across the state. The exhibit will be open from 3-5 p.m.
“Columbus holds a unique position in Mississippi’s history serving as the state capital. We hope you will make plans to join us in Columbus as we kick off the statewide celebration of Mississippi’s 200th birthday!” said Nancy Carpenter, CEO, Visit Columbus.
On Monday, October 3, the exhibit will open to local schools for viewing from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The exhibit will open to the general public from 1-5 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided.
