VIDEO: University Of Mississippi Hosts Forum To Discuss Post-Election Issues
OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI)-It’s been a little over a week now since Donald Trump has won the 2016 presidential election.
Since then, there’s been numerous hate and racist-related incidents that have taken place stemming from his victory.
Now, the University of Mississippi wants to help ease that tension amongst its student body.
Ole Miss leaders pledged earlier this year to take race-related hate speech and bullying more seriously.
On Wednesday, the university held an forum called “Confronting the Hate: Processing and Challenging post-election Bias and Racism.”
A packed classroom full of students and faculty came out to express their concerns, reactions, and experiences since the election.
Faculty members hope this can ease some tension, and said they were impressed with the response from the students.
“This is important to allow students to leave a space where they can share their thoughts and feelings with one another in a way that’s civil, and where then can be open with one another and feel supported in this community,” said Melinda Sutton, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at the University of Mississippi.
The Center for Inclusion and Cross-Cultural Engagement and the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation were in charge of putting on the event.
