VIDEO: National Wreaths Across America

OKOLONA, Miss.(WCBI)- Today is, National Wreaths Across America Day.

The mission is to Remember, Honor, and Teach and is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as over 11-hundred locations across the U-S

One of those cities is Okolona.

Saturday morning veterans gathered down town to witness the laying of the wreaths.

Day at 12 pm eastern time the wreath laying ceremonies began across the country.

Celia Fisher brought this national tradition to the Chickasaw county area through the Lanier Club and The general federation of women’s club.

She says the long time preparation was worth seeing the veterans face light up Saturday.

“The funds that we raise through this or any of our other fund raisers go back into the community, the state and the nation and world,”said event coordinator Celia Fisher.

“It means a lot because before I came back home and retired I use to see it all the time and I never really participated. And to be able to take part in this because I’m honored not just for myself but for the veterans who came before me,”said Veteran Barbra Walker.

Okolona holds graves of 250 American Veterans of the civil war.
