VIDEO: Knowing How To Defend Yourself

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-Some Mississippi State students were hitting the mats instead of hitting the books on Monday night.

Area law enforcement members and martial-arts experts led a hands-on seminar in self-defense.

The students learned tactics to break free from attackers, fight back, and escape.

Students also learned how to use self defense devices such as pepper spray.

“There is a lot of people that come in not necessarily being naive but just unaware of the possibilities that it can happen when they’re out and about on their own,” said Jae McIntosh, owner and lead instructor at No Limit Jiu-Jitsu. “Mom and dad isn’t here with them so I have to learn to defend themselves, and is something a lot of people take for granite. A lot of people don’t pay attention to these things so it’s very much needed.”
“We just felt that with spring break coming up next week a lot of college students are going out of town, so it’s important for them to know how to defend themselves, how to recognize a dangerous situation, and how to get out of a dangerous situation if they find themselves in one,” explained Forrest Wright, co-coordinator for the event.

The Starkville Police and Fire Departments, Downtown Martial Arts Academy, No Limit Jiu Jitsu, and a personal security firm, Trust the Training, were all instructors during the seminar.
