VIDEO: Remembering Libby

GORDO, Miss.(WCBI)—Her story touched people all over the country.

Libby Scott Hankins passed away Friday after a life-long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.

Family and friends launched the “Lungs of Libby” campaign as she prepared for a double lung transport last year.

Hundreds gathered in Gordo, Alabama to celebrate her life.

 

“It’s a very sad day,”said Gordo Alabama Mayor.

The emotions being felt Wednesday morning as; friends, family, community members and classmates flooded the Gordo High School Football Stadium.

“Everyone in the community knows Libby We’ve always thought of Gordo as a special community with a lot of special people, and among those special people a lot of lights shine brighter than others, and Libby’s light shown brightly,”said Gordo Mayor Craig Patterson.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system.

Libby’s death highlighted the importance of organ donation. Abigail Lesley who worked to raise funds for Libby’s Double Lung transplant.

” It’s amazing how many people supported her along the way. I was blessed to help with the bracelet fundraiser. I’ve sent bracelets to Kansas, Wisconsin, New York; it’s just amazing,”said Lesley.

Lesley says Libby’s journey also sheds light on the disease of itself.

” She has definitely given a face to Cystic Fibrosis. I know a lot of people never heard of it before they met Libby, before they heard her story. She definitely has spread more awareness to this disease through her passing and through her story,”said Lesley

Gordo resident, Cade Junkin, says though he didn’t I know Libby personally, he learned valuable lessons from her battle.

” The main thing to learn from Libby was to always keep fighting. She had so many obstacles thrown her way and she just kept fighting… all the way until the end,”said Junkin.
